Football Kicks Off Season at Marist Saturday

Lions and Red Foxes meet up under the lights in Poughkeepsie

NEW YORK - The Columbia football team is set to begin the 2022 season on the road when it makes the short trip to Poughkeepsie to take on Marist Saturday, September 17. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN3.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

1. Columbia has won its last four season openers, and are looking for a second-straight season opening win over Marist.

2. The Lions return three All-Ivy honorees from the 2021 squad, headlined by junior quarterback and 2021 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Joe Green.

3. Columbia boasts an entire senior starting offensive line. All five seniors saw action in at least five games during 2021.

4. 2021 leading tackler, Scott Valentas returns for 2022, and up front Mitch Moyer returns his 33 total tackles and 1.5 sacks to power the Lions at the point of attack.
 


THE MATCHUP
Columbia (0-0) opens its 2022 and 152nd year of football with a trip up the Hudson River to visit Marist (0-1) in what will be the Red Foxes' second game of the season. Its only the sixth time the two New York programs have met on the gridiron and only the second time the Lions have visited Poughkeepsie. It's also the second-straight season the Lions have opened against Marist, with Columbia taking the 2021 opener at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence Wein Stadium, 37-14. Its also the first time Columbia has opened the season on the road since 2019, when the Lions visited St. Francis (Pa.), taking that game 34-14.

THE LIONS ROAR
Columbia enters 2022 having looking for its fourth winning season in five years, and come into the year have its most successful four-year run in 73 years. The Lions return alot of pieces from last year's team that finished third in the Ivy League, including 2021 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Joe Greene. The Lions will be on the hunt for the continued success they have had under Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Al Bagnoli, with three of Columbia's eight winning season all-time coming under coach Bagnoli. And the Lions return an experienced collection of lettermen, with nine offensive and seven defensive Lions returning from the 2021 two-deep roster.

MUST SEE TV
Columbia has partnered with SportsNet NY (SNY) to televise two games, the Lions' home-opener against Princeton on October 1 and homecoming against Dartmouth on October 22. This is the fifth consecutive year Columbia will be featured on the regional sports leader. With a total distribution of nearly 11 million homes, SNY is available to viewers throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Northeastern Pennsylvania for a regional reach of 8.0 million households.
