Tennis, Cross Country, Women’s Soccer in action

NEW YORK  Four Columbia athletics programs will travel to compete this weekend, including ITA Regional and All-American events for both men's and women's tennis, a cross country meet at Lehigh and women's soccer's second Ivy League game of the season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Columbia women's tennis is set to compete at the ITA Regionals in Princeton, New Jersey, and the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, North Carolina this weekend. Anna Zhang will represent the Lions at the All-Americans event, while Fatima Keita, Sophia Wang, Winta Tewolde, Rachele Rimondini, Clarine Lerby and Julia Haynes will compete in the singles portion at Regionals. Shivani Amineni and Sophia Strugnell are in the doubles draw. The draws for ITA Regionals begin with the singles Round of 128 and doubles Round of 64 on Friday. The winners of the Round of 16 singles and Doubles Quarterfinals advance to the ITA Super-Regional, which is set for October 21-24 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Meanwhile, Zhang will begin her quest at ITA All-Americans, which runs through until the championship match on October 9.

MEN'S TENNIS
Columbia men's tennis continues its fall schedule when they send a handful of Lions to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the competitive ITA All-American Championships. The first Lions will compete on Monday, October 3. In singles, Columbia is sending No. 10 Alex Kotzen, who will be in the main draw, while Max Westphal, Theo Winegar and Michael Zheng will start in the qualifying draw. On the doubles side, No. 21 Westphal/Winegar will start in the main draw, while in the qualifying draw, Columbia will have the tandem of Kotzen/Zheng. The qualifying rounds for both singles and doubles will run from Oct. 3-4. The main draws for both singles and doubles will run from Oct. 5-9.

Cross Country LOTR 09_30

CROSS COUNTRY
After a weekend off, Columbia cross country returns to the course for the Paul Short Run, set to get going in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 30. In Columbia's previous competition weekend, the squad was split between the Iona Meet of Champions, hosted at Van Cortlandt Park, and the Indiana Coaching Tree Invite, hosted by Indiana and run in Bloomington, Indiana. Nikki Vanasse (6K/20:26.9) and Tyler Berg (8K/23:49.5) led the Lions with sixth-place finishes, respectively, at the highly competitive Coaching Tree Invite.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Columbia women's soccer (5-2-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) is coming off a strong Ivy League-opening win over Cornell, taking down the Big Red, 1-0, last Saturday at home. Shira Cohen scored the lone goal in the 40th minute and Paige Nurkin posted a clean sheet, stopping three Cornell shots. It was the first time Columbia opened conference play with a win since 2019 and the first conference-opening win at home since 2018. The Lions now head to Providence, Rhode Island to face the Brown Bears (6-2-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) who are coming off a, 4-1, Ivy League-opening win at Dartmouth. It's the 36th meeting all-time between the two programs, and Brown holds a 16-12-7 advantage.
