Field Hockey, Men's Soccer, Men's Golf in action this weekend
NEW YORK — Three Columbia athletics programs will be hitting the road for competition this weekend, including a game against a nationally ranked opponent for field hockey, an interborough contest for men's soccer and the fall opener for men's golf.
Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview all of that week's upcoming road games. Be sure to access each team's website on gameday to keep up with all of the action as it happens.
FIELD HOCKEY
Columbia field hockey (1-1) will remain on the road for a two-game swing in Virginia, taking on No. 14 Old Dominion (3-1) and VCU (1-2). The Lions' opened their season with a 3-1 victory over LIU at home on Friday, before falling to No. 10 Syracuse (6-2) in upstate New York. Four Lions have found the back of the net this season, including first-years MK Myklebust and Sophia Abate. This season, Old Dominion has outscored opponents 13-7. The Monarchs earned a 3-2 victory over then-No. 14 Boston College last week to climb five spots in the polls. Meanwhile, VCU picked up its first win in its home-opener, defeating Lafayette, 3-2. The Rams will take on Queens (N.C.) on Friday before hosting the Lions on Sunday.
MEN'S SOCCER
Columbia men's soccer (0-2-0) will take a short bus ride to Gaelic Park in the Bronx for a Friday night clash at Manhattan College (1-2-1). The Lions will hope to build on the momentum from the last 25 minutes of Tuesday night's home opener, where they rallied from two goals down to cut the lead in half but came up just short. Jake Novoshelski came in off the bench to score his first goal of the season in the 76th minute and Columbia kept applying pressure all the way until the final whistle. Friday's match at Manhattan will make for a rematch of last year's 2-2 draw at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. By car, Columbia's and Manhattan's home fields are separated by just two miles.
MEN'S GOLF
The men's golf team opens its fall schedule by splitting the roster between two different tournaments this weekend. Five Lions will compete at The Doc Gimmler, hosted by St. John's at Bethpage Red. Columbia will roll into that tournament as the defending champions, winning last year's edition by a single stroke over second-place Harvard and Connecticut. Nathan Han finished eighth in the 78-man field at 1-under-par 209. Classmate DJ Francey and sophomore William Sung tied for 14th (+3). All five Lions who combined for the team title at last year's event have returned this year. Additionally, the Lions will send three to compete at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate, which takes place at Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, Connecticut. Live stats are expected to be available for each tournament, courtesy of Golfstat.
