Former men’s squash standout joins Sachvie’s staff
NEW YORK — Kenneth W. Torrey Director of Squash Chris Sachvie announced the hiring of James Wyatt '22CC as an assistant coach on Friday. Wyatt recently graduated from Columbia after competing for four years on the men's squash team.
"I am very excited to have James joining the Columbia Squash coaching staff after an incredible career as a student-athlete," Sachvie said. "James gained the trust and respect of his teammates very quickly upon his arrival at Columbia, prompting them to vote James as team captain in his final three seasons. I am thankful that we are able to keep him in Columbia Blue and know the leadership, passion and care he showed as a player and captain will serve him well as a coach."
Wyatt was a two-time All-Ivy League and two-time All-American for the Lions who compiled 20 victories through three competition seasons. He was unanimously voted Team MVP and Most Improved Player as a first-year, becoming the first Lion in the history of the program to win both awards in the same season. The three-year captain was also a finalist for Men's Rookie of the Year at the 2019 Varsity C Celebration, and was the squash program's first European recruit.
"I am really excited to continue to be a part of such an amazing program," Wyatt said. "I want to thank Director of Squash Chris Sachvie for giving me this opportunity. Having played for Chris when he was an assistant coach, I know he has a good vision for the program, and I am fully committed to Chris in delivering success for the teams."
Prior to Columbia, Wyatt was the captain of England's U19 World Junior Squash Championship Team. He also captained the Whitgift School squash team and was the former No. 1-ranked U19 squash player in England.
Aside from his athletic experience, Wyatt interned at vVARDIS this past summer, which is a Swiss life-science and health-tech startup in New York. Wyatt also had the opportunity to intern at Cube Partnerships in Manchester, U.K., as well as CEO.works in London.
A native of London, Wyatt now resides in Manhattan.
