Lions Win Three Events at Competitive Dr. Sanders Columbia Challenge

Patrick Passalacqua sets new men's shot put program record

NEW YORK — The Columbia indoor track and field team hosted the Dr. Sanders Columbia Challenge this weekend at the Armory, and had a great showing against a strong field of competitors. 

Among the schools who made the trip to New York City for the competition included Albany, Brown, UConn, Cornell, Hampton, Iona, La Salle, Manhattan, Maryland, Rowan, Saint Augustine's, Saint Peter's, St. John's, St. Joseph's, Stony Brook, Syracuse, UCLA, South Carolina, and Ursinus.

On the women's side, the Lions finished in fourth place with a score of 34.5. The men finished in fifth place, scoring 53.5 points. 

The highlight of the weekend came in the men's shot put, in which Patrick Passalacqua set a new program record with a 17.23m throw. He finished in third place in the event. 

The men's distance medley relay team had an impressive performance, winning the event with a time of 10:02.04. Matt Gatune led the way, followed by Austin Rios-Colon and Jacob Van Orden. Ryan Borden brought them home. 

Matthew Mazero won the 60m dash, clocking in with a time of 6.97. 

Elia Ton-That represented the women with a dominant performance in the 3000m run, taking first place with a time of 9:27.10. 



ON DECK: The Lions will compete in the Mets Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. in Staten Island.
