Five Lions earn podium finishes in season-opening event
MANNHEIM, Pa. — Two Columbia archery first-years won gold in their respective divisions at the Easton/Lancaster Youth & Trophy Tournament. Sydney Sullenberger took first place in the women's collegiate compound, while Lillian Han won the women's collegiate recurve.
Sullenberger and Han were two of five Lions to podium in the team's season opener. Judith Gottlieb and Dorothy Vassantachart earned silver and bronze, respectively in the recurve. Sachiko Keane was just behind Sullenberger, taking silver in the compound.
Sullenberger posted a score of 643 with her 60 arrows, averaging a score of 10.72 per arrow. She bested Keane by 10 points in total. First-year Giselle DeSousa earned a top-five finish as well, placing fourth with a score of 623.
The Lions swept the podium in the recurve. Han edged Judith Gottlieb, 630-629, to claim first place. She averaged 9.5 per arrow to Gottlieb's 9.48. Meanwhile, Dorothy Vassantachart followed with bronze and a score of 556.
"It was great. We competed last year but it didn't feel normal. This feels like the start of a normal season," Columbia archery head coach Derek Davis said. "I'm really happy with the performance of our first-years. This is a good start to the season and I think it's only going to get better from here. I'm excited for what is to come."
Davis touted the performances of Vassantachart and sophomore Hannah Kim, who took eighth in the compound with a score of 572.
"I'm proud of both Dorothy and Hannah," Davis went on to say. "That was a breakout day for the two of them and I'm feeling good about where they are to start the season."
The tournament began Saturday afternoon and lasted through an 8 a.m. shoot on Sunday. All Columbia competitors shot on Saturday.
