BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Columbia women's fencing continued to roll, going 5-0 at the LIU Shark Showcase Sunday. The Lions topped Yale, Hunter College, Princeton, LIU and St. John's to head into the conference championships on a high note. The men's squad went 3-2, earning victories over Yale, Hunter and LIU.
"This year, we are ensuring we have a lot of competitive bouts in preparation for the Ivy Round Robins," head coach Michael Aufrichtig said. "Adding this competition is a step towards being our best in Ithaca in two weeks."
The day started with the men dispatching Yale, 24-3, and the women claiming a 20-7 decision over the Bulldogs. Men's foil stood out, with Ashton Daniel, Zachary Binder, Joon Paik and Andrew Zheng combining to go 9-0 to earn a clean sweep.
After both teams blanked Hunter, 27-0, the Lions' attention turned to Ivy League rival Princeton. Audrey Chu posted a 3-0 mark to help women's epee earn a 7-2 edge and help Columbia get by the Tigers in a hard-fought battle, 16-11. The men were competitive with the Tigers as well but came up short, 16-11.
The men bounced back with a 26-1 decision over the host Sharks, while the women doubled up LIU, 18-9. Sofia Gaydos led the women's squad with three bout wins in foil.
To close the day, the women picked up another 18-9 victory over St. John's. An 8-1 win in foil gave Columbia enough separation to earn the victory with Zander Rhodes and Vivian Zheng each going undefeated against the Red Storm.Â
The men fell by one match, 14-13, to St. John's. Columbia won foil, 6-3. However, the Red Storm evened things up in sabre and secured the win with a 5-4 outcome in epee.
The Lions are back in action for the Ivy League Round Robin Championships, being held from February 11-12 in Ithaca, New York.
