
Men’s, Women’s Fencing in First After First Day of Ivy League Championships

Both teams finish the day 3-0 and have the chance to claim outright titles tomorrow
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia men's and women's fencing teams both finished the first day of the Ivy League Round-Robins 3-0 with impressive showings on Saturday. Both teams will wrap up competition tomorrow with a chance to win Ivy League Championships.
Men's fencing got started first on Saturday as the Lions raced out to a 20-7 win over Yale. The win was highlighted by a 9-0 effort in foil. Zachary Binder, Ashton Daniel, Joon Paik, Andrew Zheng, and Bogdan Hamilton combined to complete the clean sweep.
The men faced Penn in the second round and cruised to a 19-8 victory to set up a showdown with the No. 3 seed, Princeton. The epee group of Skyler Liverant, Ethan Kushnerik, and Justin Haddad worked together to go 8-1 through their bouts.
Columbia's matchup with the Tigers was drama-filled and went down to the final bout. With the score tied, 13-13, Daniel battled back-and-forth against Princeton's Brandon Li until he prevailed in a 5-4 bout win to clinch the match for the Lions. Daniel finished the day with a perfect 8-0 record in foil action. He is in first place individually heading into the final day of the championship.
Colby Harley posted a 7-2 record in sabre through day one and sits in fourth place individually. Haddad also finished 7-2 in epee to put him in third place.
As a team, Columbia is in first place at 3-0, ahead of 2-0 Harvard, who it will face in its final round Sunday morning.
The women also cruised to three wins on Saturday. The Lions started the first round with a 20-7 win over Cornell. Sabre went 8-1 to complement the dominating win.
Columbia met Penn in the second round, and battled to a 16-11 win. Sabre, once again, was the difference after picking up an 8-1 decision.
The Lions wrapped up the day with a 20-7 win against Brown in the third round. Foil finished 8-1 in the match.
Nora Burke led the Lions with an 8-0 record in sabre and sits in first place heading into the final day. Chloe Gouhin was also perfect, going 6-0 in sabre. Zander Rhodes led foil with a 6-2 record throughout the day. Rhodes is tied for fifth overall.
Columbia wraps up the Ivy League Round-Robin Championships on Sunday in Ithaca. The men will play Harvard at 10:30 a.m. with a shot to clinch the outright title. The women will then finish off their last three matches against Yale, Harvard, and Princeton starting at 12:15 p.m.
