PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Columbia volleyball team came up short in its quest to earn its first Ivy League victory of the season on Saturday evening, dropping a conference contest to the Penn Quakers in four sets (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19) in Philadelphia.
Eva Atkins and Logan Harlock were on fire in the first two sets, but unfortunately the Lions were not able to keep up with the Quakers. The Lions held early leads in both games, 10-8 in set one and 15-12 in set two, but that would be as close as they could get. The Quakers used runs of 6-1 in game one and 9-1 to take the lead in each set and ultimately take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Columbia would not go down without a fight, coming out hot in the third set. Harlock sparked a 3-0 run midway through the game which gave the Lions a 16-15 lead. The lead remained one, but back-to-back kills would help Columbia see that lead grow to 21-17. Harlock would put the finishing touches on the set, smacking her third kills in eight rallies to keep Columbia alive in the game. Unfortunately, the Quakers would control set four for its entirety, and go on to win the match 3-1.
Atkins and Harlock had nine kills each to lead the Lions. Ruby van der Heide collected her second career double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs, and narrowly missed out on a triple-double smacking a career-high six kills. Lauren Cho had an awesome game on defense for Columbia, notching a career-high 19 digs.
Columbia is back at it next weekend, taking on Cornell in Ithaca on Saturday afternoon. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
