NEW YORK – Brown jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead and used a strong defensive effort to push past Columbia on Saturday evening at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Columbia falls to 7-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in Ivy League action this season.
 
The Bears got off to a quick start as senior forward Brittany Raphino made a long run into the box and fired the ball inside the right post to score 35 seconds into the first half. Raphino's goal would be the only of the game as Brown held on to take the 1-0 win.
 
Columbia controlled possession most of the second half, but could not capitalize on a few opportunities at the net. Kat Jordan, Sam Gordon and Shira Cohen each registered a shot on goal in the game. Jordan led the team with three total shots.
 
Brown outshot the Lions, 11-8 overall with five shots on goal compared to Columbia's three. The Bears took seven shots in the first half before Columbia controlled possession for most of the second half, taking six shots.
 
Senior goalkeeper Paige Nurkin played all 90 minutes in the net as she tallied four saves and allowed one goal.

Columbia returns home next Saturday, October 21 for another Ivy League matchup against Yale. First kick is set for 2 p.m. at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Arrive early to celebrate the team's seniors during senior day festivities before the game.
