Lions post impressive second round to climb the leaderboard
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — Sophomore Emma Shen carded a career-low round of 1-under-par 71 to highlight the Columbia women's golf team's performance on Saturday at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being hosted at Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
Shen bounced back from an opening-round 81 with four birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars in her 71. Starting at the 10th, Shen made the turn in 1-over 37 before a bogey at the par-5 fourth put her at 2-over on the round. She turned it on from there, parring the sixth before closing with three consecutive birdies at seven, eight and nine for her career-low round.
"Personally, I managed my short game a little better in the afternoon and we all stayed patient throughout the round," Shen said. "It was a good experience to play in this type of wind, which will hopefully help us when we play in future tournaments."
Shen and the rest of the Lions turned it around in the afternoon round. Along with Shen's 71, sophomore Yoko Tai posted a 74, junior Paige Harrison posted a 75 and junior Angela Zhang posted a 78. The top-four scores in the lineup combined for a 10-over-par 298, marking a 24-shot improvement from the morning round.
"We were able to adjust to the wind in the afternoon and managed it much better than we did in the morning," Shen added. "That helped with our overall confidence on the course."
Shen and Tai (+8) are tied for 17th in the 11-team, 66-player field. Tai started with a 6-over 78 and posted three birdies over her final nine holes for a second-round 74. Columbia (+44) is tied for seventh with Navy.
