Linebacker Anthony Roussos and punter William Hughes pick up first team selections
PRINCETON, N.J. — Columbia football saw six student-athletes achieve All-Ivy League status, the conference announced Tuesday. Senior punter William Hughes was a unanimous first team selection and was joined by linebacker Anthony Roussos. On the second team, the Lions were represented by running back Joey Giorgi and defensive end Justin Townsend. Sophomore center Mark Chapman and senior return specialist Carter McFadden rounded out the group as part of the honorable mention team.
Hughes led the Ivy League and ranked No. 6 in the FCS, averaging 44.0 yards per punt, which ranks No. 2 on the Lions' single-season list. He recorded 18 kicks of over 50 yards, including a career-long 71 against Marist on Oct. 7, and pinned opponents inside the 20 on 19 occasions. A two-time Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week, Hughes is Columbia's all-time leader in yards/per punt (43.8).
Roussos was the second leading tackler in the Ivy League, posting 93 on the year. His 5.7 solo tackles per game puts him in the top 10 of the FCS and he added 10.5 tackles for a loss. Roussos posted double-figure tackles in five games, including a career-high 13 against Brown on Nov. 11.
Giorgi compiled 628 rushing yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, and had four total touchdowns in nine games. His season-high of 116 yards on the ground came in a win over Georgetown on Sep. 23. Giorgi ranked No. 3 in the Ivy League in rushing and averaged 86.1 all-purpose yards per game.
Townsend continued to be one of the premier pass rushers in the conference, tying for the Ivy League lead in sacks (7.5) and posting 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, which was second in the Ancient Eight. He had multiple sacks in three contests, including the final two games of the campaign. Townsend now has 13.5 career sacks, which is fourth most in program history.
Chapman earned the starting center job out of training camp and stayed there for all 10 games. He anchored an offensive line that rushed for over 200 yards three times. McFadden was a weapon in the return game in both kickoffs and punts. He ranked third in the Ivy League in kickoff returns (23.2) and punt returns (10.2). McFadden posted season-highs with a 48-yard punt return and 35-yard kickoff runout in a win over Georgetown.
Columbia's Academic All-Ivy League selection is Patrick Passalacqua, a junior Industrial Engineering & Operations Research major in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering & Applied Science. Passalacqua is a two-year starter on the defensive line, who posted 12 tackles on the year, and was named a team captain prior to the season.
