PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia women's basketball senior Abbey Hsu and first-year Riley Weiss have been named the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for games played November 27 – December 3. The league office announced its weekly awards Monday afternoon, as voted on by media representatives from around the Ancient Eight.
Hsu earned her second Player of the Week nod of the season after averaging 20.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in a pair of Big East wins over Providence, 77-52, and Villanova, 77-75. She scored a game-high 19 against the Friars and followed with a team-high 22 in Sunday's thriller against Villanova. Hsu scored 15 of those 22 points in the second half, including a game-winning three-point play with 8.7 seconds remaining. She then poked the ball away from Villanova's Lucy Olsen to deny a potential shot from the visitors at the buzzer.
A native of Parkland, Florida, Hsu is the Ivy League's leading scorer at 21.2 points per game this season. Her scoring average ranks No. 17 in the NCAA, while her 191 total points rank No. 7. Additionally, she ranks No. 4 nationally in field goals made (72), No. 12 in 3-pointers made (26) and No. 32 in 3-pointers made per game (2.89). Among Ivy League players, the 5-11 senior guard is No. 4 in rebounding and top-10 in blocks (0.9).
This is the ninth career Ivy League Player of the Week selection for Hsu, which is one behind the Columbia women's basketball program record of 10, currently held by Judie Lomax '10BC and Camille Zimmerman '18CC.
Weiss won her first Ivy League Rookie of the Week award after averaging 13.0 points across the two wins. She was lights out from 3-point range, connecting at a 66.7-percent clip (8-12) for the week while going 9-of-19 (.474) from the field overall. Her best performance came against the Wildcats, scoring 17 points off the bench on 6-of-12 shooting and a scorching 5-for-7 (.714) mark from long range. The Hewlett, New York native added three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Weiss is the Ivy League's top 3-point shooter this season among qualified players at 42.2 percent. She ranks top-25 in the Ivy League in scoring (8.7) and No. 11 in field goal percentage (.453).
Columbia will go for a fourth straight win on its homestand Wednesday night, hosting Memphis at Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium at 7 p.m. ET.
