Lions face No. 2 Harvard in First Round of Main Draw
NEW YORK — The No. 7 Columbia women's squash team begins its quest at the College Squash Association Team National Championships on Friday when it faces off with No. 2 Harvard at 12:30 p.m. ET. The 2023 Women's Team Championships are being hosted by Penn in Philadelphia.
The seventh-seeded Lions are competing in the top draw for the Howe Cup. They went 4-6 in the regular season with a 3-3 Ivy League record. Despite its record, Columbia has the capability to make a run for the title. Four of the team's six losses came by 5-4 score lines. The other two were by scores of 6-3.
The 2023 CSA Women's Team National Championships run Friday-Sunday. All eight teams competing for the Howe Cup will play one match per day. Columbia and Harvard (11-1, 6-0 Ivy) played a match that came down to the wire in the regular season just a few weeks ago. Farida Mohamed closed out the opening wave with a four-game victory against Marina Stefanoni in the No. 1 match. The Lions then swept the second wave with three-game victories by Simmi Chan (2) and Nourin Khalifa (6), as well as a four-game victory by Kiro Manoharan (7). Manoharan and Chan finished within minutes of each other, putting the Lions up, 4-2, in the team score. Harvard snuck away with the win by taking each of the last three matches.
The Lions were led in the regular season by junior Farida Mohamed and sophomore Simmi Chan. The consistent top-two in the lineup combined to go 16-2 individually and were each named First Team All-Ivy League for a second straight season.
