Columbia moves to consolation bracket to face Cornell on Saturday
PHILADELPHIA — No. 7 Columbia was defeated by No. 2 Harvard, 6-3, on Friday in the Opening Round of the College Squash Association (CSA) Women's Team National Championships. This year's national tournament is being held on the campus of Penn.
The Lions now move to the Howe Cup consolation bracket and will take on No. 6 Cornell Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Friday's contest against the Crimson started with the Nos. 3, 5 and 7 taking the court. Sarah Cao pulled out a three-game win at No. 5, taking down her opponent, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, in a matter of 29 minutes.
Harvard went up 4-2 after the second wave, winning match at Nos. 4 and 9. Columbia took its second team point at No. 1, as First Team All-Ivy honoree Farida Mohamed bested Marina Stefanoni in four games, 11-9, 4-11, 11-2, 11-8.
Columbia needed to win all three matches in the final wave to pull off the upset but couldn't quite do it. First Team All-Ivy sophomore Simmi Chan (10-0) stayed unbeaten on the season with a three-game sweep at No. 2. However, Harvard won at Nos. 4 and 8 to bring the match to its final tally.
