PHILADELPHIA — No. 7 Columbia bounced back with a 5-4 victory over No. 6 Cornell on Saturday at the College Squash Association (CSA) Women's Team National Championships. The tournament is being contested on the campus of Penn.
Saturday's victory moves the Lions into the fifth-place match on Sunday, where they'll take on No. 4 Drexel at 11:30 a.m. ET.
Columbia took advantage early against Cornell, as Farida Mohamed needed just 24 minutes for a three-game sweep against Sivasangari Subramaniam, 11-7, 11-4, 11-4. Nourin Khalifa picked up the Lions' second point with a four-game win against Ananya Dabke, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7, 13-11.
Leading 2-1 after the first wave, the Lions doubled their lead to 4-2 with a 21-minute sweep by Simmi Chan at No. 2, and a 26-minute sweep by Amal Izhar at No. 8. That set the Lions up for victory, needing just one more match to clinch it.
Erica McGillicuddy (3) and Sarah Cao (5) fought valiantly in their matches but ultimately were defeated in four and five games, respectively. However, Elizabeth Lentz got it done at No. 7, bouncing back after dropping the opening game to defeat Alexis Shatzman, 11-13, 11-9, 11-6, 11-7.
