PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Columbia men's swimming and diving team currently resides in third place after the first night of the 2023 Ivy League Championships. This year's event, hosted on the campus of Brown University, will run through February 25, with three more full days of events still to be completed.
The Lions have accumulated 106 points thus far, adn are currently tied with Yale for third place. Princeton and Harvard are currently tied for first place with 120 points.
Tonight, Columbia competed in the 200-medley relay as well as the 800-free relay.
The night got off to a great start, with the Lions earning a bronze medal in the 200-medley relay in the opening event of the championships. The team of
Andy Huang,
Demirkan Demir,
Brian Lee, and
Zion James touched the wall with a time of 1:25.53 to take third place.
Unfortunately, despite finishing fourth in the 800-free relay, the Lions were disqualified due to an early take off. This cost Columbia 52 points which would have had them sitting in third place.
Adam Wu did manage to set a program record with a time of 1:33.90 in the leadoff leg of the event, however.
-UPDATE (2/23)- The disqualifications from Wednesday's evening session were overturned by the championship head official due to likely system malfunctions from the relay takeoff pads. Therefore, Columbia's received its 52 points from its third place finish, and vaults up to third place in the competition. In addition, the 800-free relay team's time of 6:25.10 is now officially a program record.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the first preliminary round of the week. Finals are set for 6 p.m. Both rounds will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
