Columbia Cruises to Victory at Brown, 83-55

Lions move one step away from first Ivy League title

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Kaitlyn Davis recorded her 20th career double-double and five Lions scored in double figures, as the Columbia women's basketball team earned its 22nd victory of the season, 83-55, Saturday afternoon at Brown.

The win puts Columbia (22-4, 11-2 Ivy) one game away from winning its first Ivy League Championship. The Lions control their own destiny to win at least a share of it next Saturday at home on Senior Night against Cornell.

Davis was the catalyst against the Bears (11-14, 4-9 Ivy), getting the Lions out of an early slump with 10 first-quarter points on her way to a team-high 17. The 6-1 tweener also used her size and athleticism to grab a game-high 13 rebounds and tally a game-high six assists. Meanwhile, fellow senior Sienna Durr netted a season-high 14 points off the bench, which included a 10-point quarter of her own in the fourth.

"I was happy to see our team respond. I thought we had a couple of good runs, particularly toward the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second," said head coach Megan Griffith '07CC, who earned her 93rd victory at Columbia to move just one away from Nancy Kalafus (1984-91) for the all-time record. "I thought, defensively, we were really solid tonight … We held them to 55 points and that's something we talked a lot about — righting the wrongs from the first time we played [Brown]."

The Lions spread the wealth with Abbey Hsu (13), Paige Lauder (11) and Jaida Patrick (10) joining Davis and Durr in double figures. Patrick stuffed the stat sheet by adding nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Lauder gathered eight boards, helping the Lions finish the afternoon with a 54-31 advantage on the glass.

It didn't start out easy for Columbia, which weathered a 9-2 start by the home team on Senior Night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Kyla Jones had five of those points on her way to a game-high 27.

"You never know and every Senior Night anything can happen," Griffith said. "Good for their seniors for starting the game that way. Monique [LeBlanc] was playing them and gave them a good chance."

After starting the game 0-for-7 from the field, the Lions responded in a big way. Davis scored four of the next seven to level the score, 9-9. That only served as the beginning of what proved to be a 20-0 run that pushed Columbia in front, 22-9. Lauder, Patrick, Davis and Hsu provided all of the scoring with the Lions connecting on eight of their last 11 shot attempts of the quarter.

A 13-2 second-quarter run that included a highlight-worthy play by Jaida Patrick expanded Columbia's lead to 20. Patrick chased a loose ball going out of bounds, leaping through the air and throwing it back over her head to Kitty Henderson. The Australian gathered it before making a left-handed drive down the lane for a bucket. Hannah Pratt also converted an old-fashioned 3-point play during the run. The Lions led by 18 at the half and had blitzed Brown, 10-0 in fast-break points. They got back in front by 20 midway through the third quarter and trailed by no less the rest of the way. Durr's 10 fourth-quarter points kept the Bears at bay.

The stage is set for Columbia's regular-season finale, which tips next Saturday, March 4, at 2 p.m. ET. The Lions will honor their graduating senior group of Kaitlyn Davis, Sienna Durr, Madison Hardy, Lilian Kennedy, Jaida Patrick, Hannah Pratt and Carly Rivera prior to the start of the game.

A win next Saturday would make those seniors Ivy League Champions.
