Rowing Programs Announce Captains And Leaders
3/10/2023 11:25:00 AM | General, Women's Rowing, Heavyweight Rowing, Lightweight Rowing
NEW YORK — All three Columbia rowing teams have announced captains and leaders ahead of the spring 2023 races.
Women's rowing associate head coach Samantha Warren has announced seniors Lulu Gebbie and Sierra Good as the captains for this spring's races. Both are enrolled in Columbia College and are four-year members of the program.
Gebbie is from San Rafael, California, and rowed for Marin. Good is a local native from New York and rowed at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx. Her mom, Diana Caskey, is the women's head swimming coach at Columbia.
"Lulu and Sierra have been crucial for our program making it through all the challenges with COVID-19," Warren said. "They are both dependable and extremely motivated."
The women's rowing team's first spring race is set for March 25 against Bucknell and Bates at Overpeck Park.
Lightweight men's head coach Nich Lee Parker announced Jack Gallagher and Aidan Mahaffey as the captains for 2023. The team selects their captains through a voting procedure run by previous captains or distinguished alumni leaders. Dan Kirrane, CC '12 oversaw this year's voting.
"The election procedure has been in place since the fall of 2013," said Parker. "Separation between coaches and athletes during voting is part of a larger athlete-centered, coach-driven performance culture."
The lightweight rowing team's first spring race is set for March 12 at Drexel.
Director of Rowing Tom Terhaar has announced the selection of seniors John Theodore, John Stankard, Michael Lee and Archer Staunton as team leaders for this spring.
"They are good student-athletes and have been crucial to the team through COVID-19 and the transition in staffing," Terhaar said. "They show up with a great attitude and desire to work that sets a productive tone to the rest of the team. Columbia is lucky to have them on the team."
The heavyweight rowing team's first race is set for April 1 at Overpeck Park against Rutgers in the Collins Cup.
