Bracket to be revealed Monday afternoon
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's basketball team accepted a bid to its second consecutive Postseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). The Lions are the automatic qualifier out of the Ivy League after winning a share of the regular season championship.
Columbia (23-5, 12-2 Ivy) put together yet another historic season under seventh-year head coach Megan Griffith. The Lions won a share of their first Ivy League Championship by going 12-2 in league play. Along the way, they earned significant wins on the road at Princeton, Miami, UMass, Memphis and Seton Hall. The team's 23 wins in the regular season are a new program record.
"There is no doubt that we are disappointed in the decision made by the NCAA selection committee," Griffith said. "We put together an impressive resume that we felt gave us a strong chance to make the NCAA Tournament field.
"That being said, we are ready to move forward and compete for a championship in the WNIT. Our team is fully committed to doing everything possible to make that happen."
Following the NCAA Selection Show that aired Sunday night on ESPN, the selection committee revealed that Columbia was the first team left out of the NCAA Tournament field.
The WNIT will post its complete 64-team bracket on Monday around 2 p.m. ET. At that time, Columbia will find out its first-round opponent and where the game will be played. Every game of the 2023 Postseason WNIT will be contested at campus sites.
First-round games will be played this Wednesday-Friday, March 15-17, followed by second-round games March 18-21. The round of 16 and quarterfinals are slated for March 22-27, followed by the semifinals on March 28-29. The 2022 WNIT Championship Game will be played Saturday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. ET, and will air live on the CBS Sports Network.
