Lions finish second nationally in the compound and recurve team event
FISKDALE, Mass. —Sachiko Keane won gold in the Compound Collegiate Women's Division, while Lillian Han won gold in the Recurve Collegiate Women's Division, highlighting a podium sweep for Columbia at USA Archery Indoor Nationals. The Lions competed at the Fiskdale, Massachusetts Regional site.
As a team, the Lions took second in both the compound and recurve. The top two individual scorers in each discipline from all regional sites combined are combined to make up the team score. Columbia finished second behind Texas A&M in the recurve and second behind Cumberland in the compound.
Keane totaled a score of 1,165 with her 120 arrows. She hit the bullseye 85 times and totaled 35 scores of 9. Her total was good enough for a fourth-place national finish among all of the regional sites. Han totaled 1,113 in the recurve to win her regional gold medal. The first-year from Kenmore, Washington placed 52 arrows in the bullseye and scored 9 with 51 additional arrows. She finished seventh nationally.
Dorothy Vassantachart (silver) and Judith Gottlieb (bronze) completed the podium for the Lions in the recurve. Vassantachart was 12 points behind Han, hitting 44 bullseyes and 56 nines. Gottlieb was one point behind Vassantachart in the battle for silver, scoring a 1,100 with 46 bullseyes and 51 nines.
Giselle DeSousa and Sydney Sullenberger tied for second in the Women's Collegiate Compound. Each Lion hit exactly 58 bullseyes and had 62 scores of nine.
"Overall, I was happy with the results," Columbia archery head coach Derek Davis said. "However, I'm really excited to transition to the outdoor season.
"Individually, that was Dorothy's best collegiate performance. She was in first place after three rounds of scoring until Lillian lit it up to pass her in the final round. Erin White also had her best performance as a Lion and I was happy to see her do well."
Erin White took fourth in the recurve (1,026), followed by Nidhi Kanchumarthi (1,012) in fifth as Columbia took each of the top five collegiate spots.
With her performance in the compound, Keane was selected as an alternate for the USA Archery Finals. The top eight scoring archers from every division combined shoot at the event.
The Lions now prepare for their Spring Break training trip, scheduled for the week of Monday, March 13 in Merida, Mexico.
