Baseball Wins Ivy League Opener Over Brown

Lions dominate the Bears in game one of the series

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball defeated Brown in its Ivy League opener on Friday, 10-3, on Friday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

Andy Leon picked up his third win of the season after tossing five innings and allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three. Will Parkinson finished the last four innings, allowing two runs on four hits to earn his first save of the season. Leon and Parkinson pitched to contact, striking out three Brown batters combined.

"Andy has been very consistent," head coach Brett Boretti said. "It was good that he worked through a couple of the walks in the last inning to get himself out of it. He's been really good at throwing strikes."

The Lions (8-9, 1-0) clubbed five extra base hits on Friday, including home runs from Weston Eberly and Cole Fellows. Griffin Palfrey was the lone Lion to record a multi-hit game. Eberly drove in a team-leading three runs while Palfrey, Fellows, Andy Blake, Hayden Schott, and Jack Kail each drove in a run.

Brown (2-13, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when DJ Dillehay singled in Jare Johnson. Columbia would take its first lead of the game in the home third on Eberly's two-run home run.

"Weston is really good at picking out his pitches," Boretti said. "That was a huge point in the game to grab us the lead right back and get us going in the right direction."

In the fourth, the Lions added on two runs to their lead to go up 4-1. Kail ripped a triple down the right field line to score Anton Lazits and give the first year second baseman his 15th RBI of the season.

The Bears cut the lead in half at 4-2 from a Gunner Boree RBI groundout in the sixth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Columbia posted a four-spot. Fellows smacked his second home run of the season to make it 5-2. Then the Lions would score three runs without recording a hit. Blake reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Sky Selinsky, and then Columbia scratched across two runs by putting the runner on first base in motion with a runner at third base twice.

"Cole has done a good job with his opportunities," Boretti said. "He's learning, too. He gets his swing off and that was a big one too. After they scored a run, he evens it up and then we score three more there."

Brown scored a run to make it 8-3 in the eighth and had the bases loaded against Parkinson with two outs. Blake made a charging play to get the runner at first and retire the side. The Lions scored two more in the eighth to seal the victory and post their second-straight game with 10 runs.

Columbia wraps up the three-game set against Brown with a double header on Sunday. First pitch in game two of the series is set for 11:30 a.m. from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
