Baseball Scores 14 Unanswered Runs To Beat Fordham, 16-9

Lions trailed 9-2 in the fourth inning before coming back to win

BRONX, N.Y. — Columbia baseball defeated Fordham, 16-9, on Wednesday at Houlihan Park to earn its fifth-straight victory.

Griffin Palfrey, Andy Blake, and Seth Dardar each drove in four runs on Wednesday afternoon. It's the first time since April 23, 2017 at Princeton that Columbia had three players drive in four or more runs in a game.

Palfrey and Blake collected three-hit games while Dardar blasted a grand slam for his seventh home run of the year. All nine Columbia starters came across to score a run in the game.

The Lions got off to a fast start two batters into the game as Blake belted his seventh home run to give Columbia (17-11, 7-2) an early 2-0 lead.

The Rams (13-20, 2-4) would score nine unanswered after being down in the top of the first. Fordham answered with a leadoff home run in the home first and then posted consecutive four-run innings in the second and third innings to take a 9-2 lead.

Columbia then rattled off 14-straight runs. In the fourth inning, the Lions scored nine runs on five hits as 12 batters came to the plate. Cole Hage, Palfrey, and Blake all drove in runs with hits while Sam Miller recorded a sacrifice fly. Trailing 9-7 with two outs in the inning, Dardar smacked a grand slam over the right field fence to put Columbia back in front, 11-7.

The Lions scratched across three more runs in the fifth to make it 14-7. Palfrey ripped an RBI single and then Weston Eberly reached on an error that scored Palfrey to prolong the inning. Hayden Schott capped the inning with an RBI single.

Columbia scored in a third-straight inning by scoring two in the top of the sixth. Palfrey recorded a hit and RBI for the third inning in a row to expand the Lions' lead to 16-9 on a two-run double.

The Lions bullpen threw six scoreless innings to close out the win. Thomas Santana, Jafar Vohra, Camron Hubble, James Vaughn, and Phil Healy all tossed scoreless innings. Columbia's pitching staff struck out nine Rams hitters in the game.

Columbia's road trip continues this weekend with a three-game set at Princeton. First pitch in the series opener on Saturday is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and will air on ESPN+.
