Archery, track & field, baseball, men's tennis and all three rowing programs set to compete
NEW YORK — Eight of Columbia's spring sports programs will be in action on the road this Friday-Sunday. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus. Be sure to access each team's website on gameday to keep up with all of the action as it happens.
ARCHERY
The archery team continues its outdoor season at the 2023 Arizona Cup this Friday through Sunday. The Lions will send nine to compete, which includes seniors Sachiko Keane and Nidhi Kanchumarthi, juniors Jessica Kim and Erin White, sophomores Judith Gottlieb, Hannah Kim and Rachel Lee, as well as first-years Giselle DeSousa, Lillian Han and Sydney Sullenberger. TRACK & FIELD
Coming off their most successful weekend at the Mets Outdoor Championships, the Lions will be back at this weekend traveling to compete in two different meets. Last weekend saw both the Columbia men and women finish in first place in the competition on Randall's Island for the first time in program history. In addition, the men's 4x100m relay squad set a new school record with a first-place time of 41.09. This weekend, the Lions will be split up and competing in the Larry Ellis Invite hosted by Princeton and the UConn Northeast Challenge hosted by the Huskies.
WOMEN'S ROWING
The Lions will race in the third annual Ivy League Invitational on Saturday at Lake Carnegie in Princeton N.J. Columbia is coming off a Woodbury Cup victory over Northeastern and Navy. It marked the first Woodbury Cup victory since 2019. In last year's Ivy League Invitational, the Lions picked up wins over Cornell and impressed against Yale and Penn.
LIGHTWEIGHT ROWING
The No. 7 Lions race against Yale and Penn in the Dodge Cup on Saturday. Columbia is coming off a Subin Cup victory over No. 9 Dartmouth last Sunday at Overpeck Park in which the Lions swept all three races over the Big Green. Columbia registered a pair of second place finishes in the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight in last year's Dodge Cup.
HEAVYWEIGHT ROWING
The No. 20 Lions will race in the Blackwell Cup against Yale and Penn on Saturday at Housatonic River in Derby, Connecticut. Last Saturday, the heavyweight team raced against Princeton and Penn in the Childs Cup at Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. At last year's Blackwell Cup in the First Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight races, Columbia battled back from a deficit and closed the gap against Penn but ran out of water and finished in third place.
BASEBALL
The Lions (17-11, 7-2) continue their road trip this weekend at Princeton (12-16, 5-4). Columbia is coming off a 16-9 win over Fordham on Wednesday in which it scored 14 unanswered runs after being down 9-2. Griffin Palfrey, Andy Blake, and Seth Dardar each drove in four runs on Wednesday afternoon. It's the first time since April 23, 2017 at Princeton that Columbia had three players drive in four or more runs in a game. All nine Columbia starters came across to score a run in the game. Entering the weekend, Columbia is tied for first place in the Ivy League with Harvard. Penn sits a game back from the lead and Princeton is two games back. Blake has reached base in all 28 games this season and Palfrey has an on-base streak of 24 games.
MEN'S TENNIS
No. 11 men's tennis heads on a road trip this weekend to face Dartmouth and No. 15 Harvard. The Lions get the weekend started with a 1 p.m. match against Dartmouth on Saturday. Columbia will wrap up the weekend with a 1 p.m. match Sunday at Harvard.
Columbia is 15-2 overall with a 2-0 start to the Ivy League slate after defeating No. 50 Princeton and No. 52 Penn last weekend. The Lions had great showings in singles play last weekend as Columbia won four singles matches both days to secure wins. Max Westphal used a thrilling three-set victory at the No. 2 singles to secure Columbia's win over Penn on Sunday.
