Pair of first-years win bronze in junior U21 divisions
PHOENIX — The Columbia archery team competed at the 2023 Arizona Cup this past weekend at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility. The team's performances were highlighted by senior Sachiko Keane taking bronze in the Women's Senior Compound, as well as first-year Lillian Han (Recurve) and Sydney Sullenberger (Compound) earning bronze in the U21 (Junior) Divisions.
"I am thrilled with our performances," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "This is a national-level event with national-ranking implications. For us to be able to showcase and prove we have some of the top talents in the country is remarkable."
Keane went to the 37-woman Senior Compound bracket after qualifying sixth. The Staten Island native had a bye in the 1/32nd Round, breezed through her first match in the 1/16th Round and took down Bella Otter, 147-144, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Once there, she eliminated third-seeded Olivia Dean, 147-145, to set up a semifinal matchup against second-seeded Tanja Gellenthien. Keane suffered a narrow defeat, 147-144, to go to the Bronze Medal Match, where she took down ninth-seeded Makenna Proctor, 145-143.
"Doing that well at any level is good, and then on Sachi's level is more special," Davis added. "She is in a division competing against professionals. Being a full-time college student in the mix and in the finals surrounded by professionals is really impressive to me."
Sullenberger took aim in the Compound U21 (Junior) Women's Division. The native of Brandon, Florida qualified first out of 21 archers with a score of 687, which broke the previous Arizona Cup record of 682 in that divison from 2015. After a bye in the 1/16th Round, Sullenberger easily won her 1/8th Round matchup to get to the quarters against eighth-seeded Kira Cook. Sullenberger earned a, 147-144, win but fell in the semifinals to fifth-seeded Ximena Estrada, 145-141. That put the rookie in the Bronze Medal Match against seventh-seeded Alicia Aviles, who Sullenberger defeated, 146-141, to take home the hardware.
Lillian Han followed suit in the Recurve U21 (Junior) Women's Division. The Kenmore, Washington native qualified sixth out of 37, flew through her 1/16th Round match, 6-0, and rallied in the final three ends to defeat No. 22 seed Hadley Spreng, 6-4 to get to the quarterfinals. Han won three of the first four ends to get past 14th-seeded Zoe Shippee before getting tripped up in the semifinals by seventh-seeded Grace Lum, 7-1. However, like her teammates, Han bounced back in the Bronze Medal Match, defeating Grace's twin sister, Samantha Lum, in three ends, 6-0, to earn the podium.
"I'm so proud of Lilian and Sydney to continue their fantastic first season in college," Davis went on to say. "To prove you can go to a school like Columbia and maintain your skill level is really impressive. There are bright futures ahead for those two."
