Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Cornell; Wins Series

Sheets tosses solid outing; Schott homers twice

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball defeated Cornell, 15-1, in game one of Sunday's doubleheader before falling to the Big Red, 13-8, in game two from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

The Lions (12-11, 4-2) have won their first two Ivy League series of the season. Seth Dardar led the Columbia offense with four hits on Sunday. Weston Eberly added three hits while Hayden Schott homered twice, drove in three runs, and scored five times. In game one's victory, Jack Kail belted a grand slam and Sam Miller came off the bench and went deep for his first career collegiate hit.

After picking off a runner in the series opener on Saturday, Eberly threw out two more Cornell base runners trying to steal on Sunday. He was recently added to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award Watch List.

"Weston is exceptional," head coach Brett Boretti said. "I think we know that but some of that credit goes to our pitchers giving him a shot to be successful. His ability to shut down running games is amazing."

Lions starting pitcher Joe Sheets pitched 7.1 innings in game one, allowing eight hits and one run while striking out six to earn his second win of the season. It was the deepest a Columbia pitcher has pitched in a game this season and is the longest outing of Sheets' career. The sophomore's ERA sits at 2.84 through six starts this year.

"Outstanding," Boretti said of Sheets' performance. "Joe's stuff was really good and he gave us a great outing. He went out and got out of a big jam in his second-to-last inning. Outstanding job."

Derek Yoo threw 3.2 innings out of the bullpen in game two. Yoo allowed one run on four hits and struck out four. Columbia pitching recorded 18 strikeouts on Sunday.

Game 1 Recap:

Columbia took a 1-0 lead in the home first when Eberly hit a bullet to left field to score Blake. In the second inning, Cornell starter Noah Keller walked the bases loaded to start the frame. The Lions were only able to score a run on a Palfrey ground out back to the pitcher and take a 2-0 lead.

Blake led off the fifth inning with a double, setting Schott up for an RBI opportunity. With the count full, Schott launched a home run over the center field fence to double Columbia's lead to 4-0. It was Schott's eighth home run of the season, which ranks second in the Ivy League.

The Lions added an unearned run in the sixth after Kail reached second on a fielding error by Cornell (3-15, 3-3). Cole Hage was able to come around and score to give Columbia a 5-0 advantage.

After allowing a leadoff triple in the seventh, Sheets struck out the next two batters and then got a ground out to escape and keep Cornell off the board to end the inning.

Cornell got its only run of the game off Sheets in the eighth on a Nathan Waugh double. The Lions poured six more runs on the board in the home eighth to make it 15-1. The inning was capped by a pinch-hit, three-run home run off the bat of Miller. It marked the third-straight game Columbia has had a pinch-hit home run.

Brandon Madrigal finished off the final 1.2 innings for the Lions.

Game 2 Recap:

Cornell got on the board first in the series finale, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Columbia responded immediately and took a 2-1 when Palfrey scored on a wild pitch and Dardar ripped an RBI single.

The Big Red tied it at 2-2 the next half inning on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Porter. The teams continued the back-and-forth in game two Sunday as Palfrey scored his second run of the game on another wild pitch to make it 3-2 Lions.

Cornell got back in front in the third by scoring three more runs to take a 5-3 lead. Max Jensen homered and Kaplan singled off Palfrey. JD Ogden came in and struck out back-to-back batters on six pitches to retire the side.

Cornell expanded its lead to 10-3 in the fourth after posting a five-spot. Waugh launched a three-run home run off Ogden in the frame. The Big Red then added another run in the fifth after homering for the third-straight inning to make it 11-3.

The Lions were able to scratch two runs across in the fifth on a Dardar double to drive in his second run of the game. Lazits grounded out to score Eberly to cut Cornell's lead to 11-5.

Schott's team-leading ninth home run of the season made it 11-6 Big Red in the seventh inning. The home run was Schott's 100th hit as a Lion and he has now gone deep in four-straight games.

Cornell put two more runs on the board in the eighth inning to cushion its lead to 13-6. The Big Red tallied 18 hits in the series finale. Columbia scored two in the ninth but didn't get any closer in the final inning of the series.

Columbia wraps up its nine-game home stand on Tuesday against UConn. First pitch from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
