Baseball Sweeps Dartmouth With Two Wins On Senior Day

Lions battle for walk-off win then handle finale with ease

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball walked off Dartmouth, 14-13, in 12 innings in the resumption of Saturday's suspended game before sweeping the Big Green with an 8-2 win in the series finale from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium on Sunday.

Columbia (22-13, 11-4) is now tied with Penn atop the Ivy League standings with two weekends of conference play remaining. It was Columbia's first extra innings game and walk-off this season. The Lions' last walk-off victory was against Princeton last April.

Weston Eberly recorded a four-hit game for the second time in his career in the series finale. Eberly, Andy Blake, and Hayden Schott each drove in a pair in the final game of the series. Columbia moves to 10-2 at home this season.

"I thought the guys did a great job dealing with a lot of different emotions," head coach Brett Boretti said. "After yesterday, they've been on a roller coaster with the delay today. Then with Senior Day."

Brandon Madrigal pitched two innings and got the win in the resumption of the suspended game before starting the series finale and going four strong.

"He was outstanding today," Boretti said. "To give us that effort in the first game and then come back and go four innings in the second game. We needed that badly. He was awesome and our pitching was awesome."

Before Sunday's action got underway, seniors John San Jule, Dane Miller, Jafar Vohra, Phil Healy, Hayden Schott, Mike Decker, Justin Tucker, Camron Hubble, Weston Eberly, Andy Blake, and Nate Beimel were recognized for their contributions and efforts to the Columbia baseball program.

Also beforehand, longtime assistant coach Jim Walsh returned to the ballpark to throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

Game 2 of the series recap:

The middle game of the series resumed on Sunday with the score tied at 11-11 after nine innings. Dartmouth scored two in the 10th before the Lions tied it in the bottom of the inning after San Jule walked with the bases loaded and Eberly singled in Decker.

In the 12th inning, Columbia walked it off on an Eberly sacrifice fly that brought Palfrey in with the winning run.

The Big Green jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on two singles and a double. Dartmouth added three more runs in the second to build a 4-0 lead on a pair of fielder's choices and a throwing error at the plate.

Columbia got on the board in the home second as Anton Lazits' career day continued with a two-run home run. In the fourth inning, Cole Hage rocketed a ball down the line that scored Eberly all the way from first to make it 4-3 Dartmouth.

Trailing 4-3 in the seventh, Skye Selinsky put the Lions in front with a two-run single that scored Lazits and Hage. Two batters later, Palfrey cushioned the lead with a three-run home run to cap a five-run inning as Columbia led 8-4 after seven innings.

Dartmouth added two in the eighth to make it an 8-6 game before Columbia poured three runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 11-6. With a run home in the inning, a downpour and lightning caused an hour delay. When play resumed, Columbia scored twice more after Selinsky and Palfrey drove in runs.

Dartmouth stormed back in the ninth and scored five runs to tie the game. Columbia got the bases loaded but couldn't convert and the game got sent to extra innings and called to darkness.

Starter Joe Sheets went five innings and allowed a season-high 10 hits but scattered four runs and struck out four.

Game 3 of the series recap:

After the Big Green took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Columbia scored three in the fifth and five in the sixth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead and never look back.

In the fifth inning, Dardar scored on a passed ball that was followed by a Schott sacrifice fly and Eberly double to make it 3-1 Columbia.

The Lions tacked on five runs in the home sixth on six hits. Sam Miller drove in two with a single, Blake doubled two home, and then Eberly knocked an RBi single to cap Columbia's scoring for the day.

After Madrigal departed following four innings, Palfrey tossed the next three, allowing one run on three hits and got the win. Derek Yoo and Hubble pitched scoreless innings to close out the ballgame.

The Lions head back on the road Tuesday to face Army West Point. First pitch from Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field is set for 6 p.m.
