Lions take team gold in recurve; six named All-East
HARRISONBURG, Va. —The Columbia University archery team won every medal it competed for last weekend at the USA Archery Collegiate Target Regionals. The Lions took team gold in the women's recurve, while first-years Sydney Sullenberger (compound) and Lillian Han (recurve) won gold individually. The event took place at James Madison University's UREC Turf Field.
"I was extremely happy with the results. This is a great way to segue into nationals," Columbia head coach Derek Davis said. "I think we are going to need to do a bit better scoring at nationals, but this is a good jumping-off point."
In addition to the medals, six Columbia archers were named to the 2023 All-East Team, which are determined by individual scores from USA Indoor Nationals and Collegiate Target Regionals. Lillian Han, Judith Gottlieb and Dorothy Vassantachart earned the honors in the recurve, while Sachiko Keane, Sydney Sullenberger and Giselle DeSousa earned the honors in the compound.
Sullenberger and Han continued their excellent first-year seasons. Sullenberger, who recently qualified for World Archery Youth Championships this summer in Ireland, qualified first in the women's compound with a score of 447. She advanced all the way to an all-Columba final against senior Sachiko Keane and edged her in a shoot-off. Meanwhile, Han qualified first with a score of 393 in the recurve and won three straight elimination round matches to advance to another all-Columbia final against Judith Gottlieb. Han took down Gottlieb in three ends, 6-0.
"Lillian and Sydney certainly have not disappointed. It's kind of what I expected but you never know," Davis added. "They have already proven to me that they are the future of the team. Their work ethic has been exceptional and their team spirit has been great."
The Lions swept the podium in both disciplines, with Dorothy Vassantachart defeating teammate Nidhi Kanchumarthi in the Recurve Bronze Medal match. Giselle DeSousa, who also recently qualified for World Youth Championships, won bronze in the compound over James Madison's Lindsay Toothaker.
Han, Gottlieb and Vassantachart then shot for Columbia in the recurve team event. They defeated opponents from JMU, Atlantic Cape Community College and Brandeis University to win team gold.
The Lions also were represented in the mixed team round. Han won more gold, pairing with Columbia club archer Steven Wu to capture the title.
Columbia will now prepare for Collegiate Target Nationals, which takes place May 18-21 down in Statesboro, Georgia.
