Baseball Takes Two From Yale In Doubleheader Sweep

Lions pitching allows just two runs over 18 innings on Saturday

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Columbia baseball defeated Yale, 1-0, in game one and 3-2 in game two for a doubleheader sweep at Bush '48 Field on Saturday.

The Lions' 1-0 victory in the series opener marked the program's first 1-0 win since April 17, 2019 vs. Monmouth and their first 1-0 Ivy League win since April 25, 2015 vs. Penn.

Starting pitchers Andy Leon and Joe Sheets each picked up victories on Saturday, combining for 13.1 innings, allowing 12 hits and giving up one earned run while striking out nine. Will Parkinson, Derek Yoo, and Justin Tucker all had scoreless outings out of the bullpen.

"Leon and Sheets gave us great starts today and our bullpen closed things out very well," head coach Brett Boretti said. "The defense made some big plays to support the pitching and we scored enough runs to get the doubleheader sweep."

Game 1 Recap:

The Lions (15-11, 6-2) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning after Anton Lazits struck out swinging for what would have been the final out but it got by the catcher. Andy Blake, who was stealing third on the pitch, raced around and dove across the plate for the game's first run to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.

Columbia also threatened in the fifth after Jack Kail was hit by a pitch and then stole second with one out. Griffin Palfrey singled and Blake walked to load the bases. The Lions couldn't capitalize as Hayden Schott struck out and Weston Eberly popped out on the infield to keep it 1-0.

Leon picked up his Ivy League-leading fifth win of the season. The sophomore threw 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out five. Parkinson relieved Leon in the seventh inning and finished off the game to earn his third save of the year.

In the eighth inning, Yale got the first two runners on against Parkinson. On the first pitch to the next batter Tommy Martin, Eberly fired a strike down to second base to pick off Jeff Pierantoni for the first out. Yale then singled to load the bases with one out. Parkinson then got a strikeout swinging on a 3-2 pitch for the second out and then followed up by striking out Ben Metzner looking to end the inning.

For the second inning, Parkinson found himself in trouble after surrendering a double to Jimmy Chatfield in the ninth inning trying to protect the one-run lead. Yale sent the runner off second with one out and the ball got lined into right field where Schott caught it and made the easy throw into second base to double off Chatfield and end the game.

Game 2 Recap:

Columbia jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the first pitch of the game from a Palfrey home run. Palfrey's fourth home run of the season was the Lions' third home run to lead off the first inning this season.

The Lions had an opportunity to add on in the following inning. After a hit and two walks, Columbia had the bases loaded with no outs. Skye Selinsky grounded one back to the pitcher who tossed it home for the out. Then Kail grounded into a double play to retire the side and end the threat.

Yale scored its first run of the day in the bottom of the second on an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1. Columbia quickly responded with two runs in the top third. Blake ripped a double to drive in Palfrey, then stole third and came home on an error by the catcher to make it 3-1.

In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs added a run on a base hit but the second runner trying to score from second was cut down at the plate as Schott launched a perfect throw to Eberly for the tag to keep Columbia in front, 3-2.

Sheets threw seven innings for the second-straight start. The sophomore scattered six hits and struck out four, allowing just one earned run. His season ERA is now 2.56, which is second-best in the Ivy League.

Yoo pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Tucker shut the door in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season. The Lions look for their first Ivy League series sweep of the season on Sunday. First pitch in the series finale from Bush '48 Field is set for 12 p.m.
