PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Columbia lacrosse team (3-9) was taken down by the Princeton Tigers on Saturday afternoon in New Jersey. Princeton gained control early, and would not let up as the Tigers went on to win 19-4.
Sophie Zachara led the Lions' attack with two goals. Cecelia Messner and Gianna Danese each had one goal.
Princeton opened the game on a 5-0 run before Danese was able to get Columbia on the board to quiet the home crowd. After Princeton scored one more goal, this time it was Zachara who found the back of the net to keep the Lions within four goals.
From that point on, it was all Tigers. They went on a 6-0 run to gain a 12-2 advantage before the half, but Zachara tried to light a fire under the Lions by beating the buzzer and scoring a goal with just six seconds left in the half.
Unfortunately, Columbia couldn't really get much going in the second half, and Princeton went on to win 19-4.
Goalkeepers Ella Sangree notched 10 saves for the Lions. Cordelia Flemming led Columbia with four draw controls to go with a caused turnover. Ellie Eisner had a team-high three ground balls.
Next up, the Lions will return home on Saturday, April 15 to host Dartmouth at 1 p.m. It will be Alumni Day, and Columbia will be raising funds for One Love.
