Gottlieb national runner-up in recurve; compound women earn silver
STATESBORO, Ga. — Four members of the Columbia University archery team were named All-Americans over the weekend at the 2023 USA Archery Collegiate Target Nationals. The event was hosted by Georgia Southern University at the Shooting Sports Education Center.
First-year Lillian Han and sophomore Judith Gottlieb earned All-American honors in the recurve. Senior Sachiko Keane and first-year Sydney Sullenberger earned All-American status in the compound. USA Archery determines its All-Americans by combining each archer's qualifying round scores from Indoor Nationals and Collegiate Target Nationals. There are 10 All-Americans named in both the Collegiate Compound Women and Compound Recurve.
Gottlieb had the best individual finish between Columbia's recurve and compound archers at the event. After qualifying 11th on Thursday, Gottlieb breezed her way through the first three rounds and the quarterfinals of the 62-competitor bracket, losing just one of 13 ends in the process. That put her through to the semis, where she defeated teammate Lillian Han in four ends, 6-2, to reach the Gold Medal Match against Olympian and top seed Casey Kaufhold of Texas A&M. Gottlieb won the first end, 27-26, but eventually fell in four to earn silver. Seventh-seeded Han fell to fifth-seeded Alyssa Nelson in the Bronze Medal Match.
Keane qualified fifth and Sullenberger qualified seventh in the compound on Thursday. Each Lion made it through to the semis, where Keane lost by a point to Marissa Harding, 145-144, and Sullenberger lost in a 144-144 shoot-off to third-seeded Danielle Woodie. That pitted Keane and Sullenberger against each other in the Bronze Medal Match, where Keane was victorious by the narrowest of margins, 144-143.
In the official team round, Columbia's recurve trio of Han, Gottlieb and Nidhi Kanchumarthi qualified third but were upset in a quarterfinal bout against sixth-seeded James Madison that went to a shoot-off, 5-4. Columbia's compound trio of Keane, Sullenberger and Giselle DeSousa qualified second and advanced to the Gold Medal Match after winning in a shoot-off over Union College in the semifinals. Pikeville edged the Lions for the Gold, 230-229.
"While we came up short on some great opportunities, I'm nonetheless happy with what we accomplished," head coach Derek Davis said. "This was a great season - one we can be proud of looking back and build on going forward. Our team fought hard and had fun while doing it. How can a Coach not be thrilled."
