LIMERICK, Ireland — Columbia University archer Sydney Sullenberger earned a gold medal in the U21 compound competition at the World Archery Youth Championships on July 8. The Brandon, Florida, native edged out Turkey's Hazal Burun, 140-138, in the championship round to earn a spot at the top of the podium. Sullenberger was joined by teammate Giselle DeSousa, who competed for Portugal in U21 compound.
Sullenberger finished the qualifying round in sixth place to earn a first-round bye in the championship bracket. After three close victories to reach the semifinals, Sullenberger guaranteed a medal with a 140-133 triumph over Avneet Kaur from India to set up the final matchup with Burun, who was the top seed going into elimination rounds.
DeSousa placed 37th in qualifying, but fell in the first round of the championship rounds.
The Lions will continue to experience international competition later this summer when Sachiko Keane and Judith Gottlieb compete for Team USA and head coach Derek Davis will serve as a coach at the World University Games from July 27-August 1 in Chengdu, China.
