NEW YORK — The Columbia football team saw 11 members selected to the Phil Steele Preseason All-Ivy League teams, as announced on July 28. Junior wide receiver
Bryson Canty and junior defensive lineman
Justin Townsend earned first-team nods.
Canty earned 2022 First Team All-Ivy League honors as he played in all 10 games for the Lions. He led the team with 73.3 average receiving yards per game for a season total of 733 yards and caught a team-high six touchdown receptions. Canty scored touchdowns in six of Columbia's ten games. Townsend played in all 10 games for the Lions in 2022 as he registered 28 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. He recorded six tackles each in games against Princeton and Dartmouth last season.
Highlighting the offense, senior running back
Joey Giorgi, senior wide receiver
JJ Jenkins and senior offensive lineman
Luke Painton garnered second-team honors. Senior offensive lineman
Andrew Pruske was recognized as third-team offense.
Giorgi led the 2022 squad with 624 rushing yards and 113 carries, playing in all 10 games with three starts. He had a career-high 159 yards on 22 carries with a 60-yard touchdown run in an overtime win at Brown. Jenkins played in all 10 games in 2022 as he registered 38 receptions for 440 yards and three touchdowns. Painton, who will be returning as an offensive lineman after playing the last three seasons as a tight end, totaled 35 catches for 253 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games in 2022. Pruske started all 10 games at the left guard position in 2022.
On defense, senior defensive back
Seth Parker earned second-team honors. Junior defensive lineman
Patrick Passalacqua and junior defensive back
Aaron Brebnor took home third-team honors.
Parker was named Honorable Mention All-Ivy League in 2022 as he started all 10 games, recording 36 tackles and one interception. He had a season-high 10 tackles in the win at Harvard. Passalacqua posted 26 total tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack as he played all 10 games in 2022. Brebnor registered 37 tackles, with 28 credited as solo tackles to go along with five pass breakups. He earned starts in all 10 games in 2022.
Senior punter
William Hughes and junior punt returner
Carter McFadden each were named second-team special teams.
Hughes was named Second Team All-Ivy League in 2022 as he served as the team's starting punter for the final four games of the season. He averaged 43.6 yards per attempt on 16 kicks. McFadden served as the team's primary punt returner in 2022 as he played in all 10 games and averaged 20.0 yards per return with a career-long of 28 at Harvard.
Columbia opens the 2023 campaign at Lafayette on Saturday, September 16. The Lions begin their home slate on Saturday, September 23 when they welcome Georgetown to Robert K. Kraft Field to battle for the Lou Little Cup.
