Football Promotes Joe D’Orazio to OC, Adds Augie Hoffmann to Staff

Columbia finalizes its staff ahead of the 2023 season

NEW YORK – Columbia football's interim head coach Mark Fabish has promoted former Columbia Running Backs Coach/Offensive Run Game Coordinator Joe D'Orazio to the offensive coordinator position for the 2023 season. Fabish also added Augie Hoffmann to the staff as the tight ends coach.

D'Orazio enters his fifth season overall in two different stints with Columbia. For the past four seasons, he served as Columbia's running backs coach and Director of Learning and Team Development. He previously worked as the tight ends coach in 2015 before spending two years with the Philadelphia Eagles, including their Super Bowl run in 2017.

As the leader of the offense, D'Orazio will look to build off his development of a strong corps of Columbia running backs the past four seasons. The Lions utilized a power and speed combination in 2022 after junior Joey Giorgi emerged as a Second Team All-Ivy League selection after posting 624 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Ryan Young, who was hampered by injuries during the first half of the season, ran for 434 yards in eight games to finish as the Lions' third all-time rushing leader with 1,749 yards.

"I'm really excited for Joe to get the opportunity to serve as offensive coordinator this season," Fabish said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion to everything he does and is deserving of this new role. We are aligned in our vision for the offense and I am very much looking forward to seeing him lead our players and staff this fall."

Hoffmann will join the Columbia coaching staff as the tight ends coach after spending the past three seasons at Rutgers, serving as the running backs coach from 2020-21 and offensive line coach the past two seasons.

Augie Hoffmann

In his first season with the Scarlet Knights, the team posted a program-best 26.7 points per game in a Big Ten season in 2020. The 26.7 points per game ranked eighth in the Big Ten, improving from No. 14 the preceding season, as the previous best ranking in Big Ten-only games was 11th.

Rutgers finished as the fourth-most improved team in the nation by scoring offense in 2020 (+13.4 points per game). The Scarlet Knights scored 81 more points than in 2019 (playing three fewer games), the sixth-best improvement in the nation in total points scored (the five higher teams all played 12 games). In addition, RU was the most improved in the Big Ten in total touchdowns scored (+12) and offensive touchdowns (+9).

Running back Isiah Pacheco earned honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2021 and left seventh in program history with 2,442 rushing yards and 11th with 3,039 all-purpose yards. He was selected in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Following the 2021 season, Hoffmann was moved to offensive line coach for spring practice in 2022.

Prior to Rutgers, Hoffmann served as head coach at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey, for six seasons. He guided the Green Knights to a 50-19 record, including two state titles and four state championship game appearances.

A graduate of St. Joseph Regional, Hoffmann was named the 15th-best offensive lineman in the nation by SuperPrep and a consensus first team all-state selection. He went on to have a standout career at Boston College where he was a four-year letterwinner and First Team All-Big East guard in 2003. He served as team captain as a senior and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District I honors in 2003 and Big East All-Academic Football team accolades. After college, Hoffmann was with the New Orleans Saints for three seasons from 2004-06.

"The entire Columbia football family is thrilled to have Augie Hoffmann joining our staff as tight ends coach," Fabish said. "I have known Augie for over a decade and have always been impressed by who he is as a person, as a coach and as a leader. With his experience playing and coaching at some of the highest level of football, it was a no-brainer for us when we were given the opportunity to make this new hire."

Also joining the staff ahead of the 2023 season are Isaiah Malcome, Jake Amsler and Jeremy Shapiro. Malcome will join the Lions as a defensive assistant after a standout career at Penn. He played in the Tokyo Dream Bowl in January 2023 and was coached by the Columbia staff as he was named MVP for his performance in the game.

A 2021 graduate of Juniata College, Jake Amsler joins the Lions as an Offensive Assistant for the 2023 season after spending the 2022 season as a defensive quality control assistant at Lafayette. Shapiro is a 2015 graduate of the University of Southern California and will serve as the Director of Player Personnel. He most recently worked as the Coordinator of Player Personnel at the University of Maryland for the past two season.

Columbia opens the 2023 campaign at Lafayette on Saturday, September 16. The Lions begin their home slate on Saturday, September 23, when they welcome Georgetown to Robert K. Kraft Field to battle for the Lou Little Cup.
