Zheng faces Otto Virtanen in the second round of qualifying
NEW YORK – Michael Zheng is one step closer to qualifying for the main draw of the US Open after posting an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win over ATP No. 197 Franco Agamenone on Tuesday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing.
Zheng will get a day off Wednesday before meeting ATP No. 134 Otto Virtanen (Finland) on Thursday in the second round of singles qualifying.
Zheng continues to make history as he joins Henry Bunis '75CC as the only Lions to play in the US Open while still in school. Zheng is the tenth Lion to participate in either the qualifying and/or main draws of singles at the event since the Open Era began in 1968 and professionals were allowed to compete.
Rising sophomore Zheng needs to win two more matches to clinch a spot in the 128-player US Open main draw, which starts play next Monday. All qualifying matches will be streamed live on ESPN+. Live scoring for all matches can be found HERE.
