Lions battle with two late goals but come up short

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Columbia field hockey dropped its season opener to James Madison, 3-2, on Friday at JMU Field Hockey Complex.

Columbia (0-1) scored two goals in the fourth quarter after being down 3-0, but JMU (2-1) was able to hold on for the win in its home opener.

The Lions and Dukes were scoreless after the first 30 minutes of play. Columbia scratched across five shots compared to JMU's seven in the first half.

JMU opened the scoring with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter. The Dukes took a 1-0 lead when Cassidy Strittmatter notched her first goal of the season on a deflection. Mia Julian was credited with the assist. The Dukes added another goal with just over a minute left in the frame. Julian found the back of the net on a penalty corner off a feed from Kiki Postma.

JMU scored its third goal just over a minute into the final period. Tori Carawan scored after a scramble in front of the net. Columbia got on the board with 7:21 remaining in the contest to make it 3-1. Kennedy Sholeen was credited with the Lions' first goal of the season and Mckenzie Bloom picked up her first career point with the assist.

Anabelle Brodeur then netted a goal with less than a minute remaining in the game off a penalty corner, but Columbia ran out of time trying to tie the game.

The Lions registered three shots on goal while JMU had 10. Columbia goalkeeper Katie Wimmer recorded seven saves. Columbia plays at four-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m.
