Field Hockey Downs Lafayette in Home Opener

Lions win 3-2 behind goals from Yu, Gonzalez Lobo, and Abate

NEW YORK — Columbia field hockey earned its second-straight win in as many days with a 3-2 victory over Lafayette in the home opener at Columbia Field Hockey Complex on Sunday.

Following a 45-minute lightning delay, Columbia (2-2) and Lafayette (1-4) managed just one shot on goal combined in the first quarter. In the second frame, the Lions scored first on Lindsey Yu's third goal of the season with 9:45 remaining until the break. Jeannine Turgeon was credited with the assist.

"It's a relief," Yu said. "We put in so much work in preseason and we took a lot from last weekend and it showed with two wins this weekend."

Columbia came out in the second half and netted two goals in the third quarter to take a 3-0 advantage. First, Delfina Gonzalez Lobo scored her first collegiate goal off a rebound less than two minutes into the period. Yu recorded the assist.

The Lions took a 3-0 lead when Sophia Abate deflected a Yu pass into the cage. Yu placed a perfect pass on Abate's stick for her to guide it past Lafayette goalkeeper Emma Garvey in what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

"I was ready on that spot and I know I wanted to get my first goal of the season today," Abate said. "My stick was down and ready so I knew I was going to score. I did everything I could to get a touch on it and lifted it right over the goalie."

It was Abate's first goal of the season and Yu's team-leading third assist of the year. Yu leads the team with nine points through the first four games of 2023.

The Leopards responded with two-straight goals later in the third quarter, but Columbia's defense held on and kept a third goal out of the net to secure the win. Josephine van Wijk tallied both goals for Lafayette, including one on a penalty corner as time was expiring in the third quarter.

Lions goalkeeper Katie Wimmer came up big with nine saves for the second day in a row. Wimmer locked down Lafayette's scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of play, stopping seven Leopards shots. Lafayette outshot Columbia 21-9 (11-7 on goal).

Sunday's game was Mental Health Awareness Day as Columbia and Lafayette partnered for the cause. Green necklaces and ribbons were handed out to spectators and staff at Columbia Field Hockey Complex. Click here to watch Maya Walker, Lindsey Yu, and Sam Petrucco discuss mental health and some of the ways they take care of themselves off the pitch.
