Premier New York metro course added to Columbia’s practice rotation
NEW YORK — The Columbia University men's and women's golf programs, along with Director of Golf Rich Mueller and head women's coach Amy Weeks, have announced a new relationship with Metropolis Country Club. Consistently ranked one of the top courses in the Metropolitan Area, Metropolis will serve as a new practice and training location for the Lions golf programs.
"We're incredibly excited to partner with Metropolis Country Club, one of the MET section's most highly recognized golf facilities," Mueller said. "Metropolis is a true test of golf with outstanding course conditions, excellent practice facilities and a wonderful golfing community."
Metropolis Club president Harold Grunfeld, remarked, "Over its 100 years in existence, Metropolis has enjoyed a storied history of great golf professionals, and a truly splendid and challenging golf course. We are excited to open our facility to the Columbia University men's and women's golf teams and look forward to aiding in the development of future golf stars and future leaders of our country."
The relationship adds Metropolis Country Club to Columbia's practice rotation. The golf programs will maintain their existing relationships with Saint Andrew's Golf Club, Haworth Country Club and Sunningdale Country Club.
"This is just such an incredible opportunity for our golf programs to train at one of the premier golf courses in the New York City area," Weeks said. "What a tremendous addition to the arsenal we provide our golfers here at Columbia. I want to thank and extend my gratitude to everyone involved at Metropolis for making this happen."
Located a mere 18 miles from Morningside Heights, the men's and women's teams are excited to have limited playing privileges to the White Plains gem. From its championship tees, the course is a challenging 6,827-yard par 70, featuring many doglegs, uneven lies and undulating greens. The course tests every aspect of the best player's shot-making ability.
In addition to Metropolis' impressive resume of MET Section events and revered architecture is its commitment to golf's next generation. The Board supports several local high-caliber college golfers, giving practice and playing opportunities. Additionally, through their work with the MET Section, Head Professional Craig Thomas and current Board member Mark Canno actively advocate for junior players to have access to Metropolis. In fact, this past summer, Metropolis hosted The First Tee for a day.
"To partner with a Club that has already proven its commitment to junior, amateur, and college golf is an absolute honor. I look forward to exploring how we can add to Metropolis's already impressive commitment to golf's future stars," said Columbia's Director of Golf, Rich Mueller.
The signature sixth hole has been ranked by many golf publications as one of the 18 best holes in the Metropolitan area and among the 500 best holes in the world. Over the years, Metropolis' reputation as a championship course and its strong support of local golf associations has allowed the club to host every major Metropolitan area professional and amateur championship.
The original 18-hole golf course, designed by Herbert Strong, was later expanded when the noted golf architect A.W. Tillinghast redesigned the course, adding the current seventh, 12th, 13th and 14th holes. In the early 1970s, architect Joe Finger reconfigured the 15th and 16th holes to accommodate some badly needed additional parking areas. During 1998 and 1999, Joe Finger's partner, Ken Dye, updated the course once again, lengthening it to its current 6,827 yards. In 2013, the club hired architect Ron Forse to embark on a total restoration/renovation project. Under Forse's guidance, along with course superintendent David McCaffrey, the project was completed in the spring of 2015. The result of that project has elevated the golfing experience at Metropolis to the finest in the Metropolitan area.
