Lions Suffer Setback in Ivy League Opener

Brown pulls away in the second half for a 4-0 win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Columbia men's soccer team's first visit to Brown in five years was not a pleasant one, resulting in a, 4-0, loss to the Bears on a cold and rainy Saturday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

"This was a disappointing result and performance from us tonight but full marks to Brown," Columbia head coach Michael Casper said. "Brown was very good and better than us today in all the areas of the game we talk about wanting to be good in. This hurts, for sure, but we now have to regroup, come together and respond this upcoming week."

The Lions (2-3-2, 0-1-0 Ivy) came out in their 2023 Ivy League opener looking like the better side over the opening 10 minutes. Senior Will DeNight put a shot on frame less than 90 seconds into the proceedings and Columbia continued to have the better of it between the two sides.

Brown (2-4-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) turned it on from there and found the back of the net for the first time in the 26th minute. A deflected shot was sent skying through the box to the left side of the six for Carlo Brown. He played it back out into the 18 for Kojo Dadzie, whose left-footed shot from 12 yards was blasted off the hand of a diving Andreas Zamanian, perfectly inside the top-left corner to break open the scoring.

Columbia managed just one shot the rest of the half but was still very much alive trailing 1-0. After a shot by Ryan Kipness started the second half, Brown earned a set piece deep in the Columbia half and doubled the lead. The ball was sent high into the center of the penalty area and headed into the six-yard box. It took a deflection off the Columbia defense and squirted out to Dadzie, who was left one-on-one with Zamanian up close and buried his second goal of the match.

The Lions had a good spell of possession immediately following the goal, firing off three shots in between a corner kick over a five-minute stretch. Ultimately, nothing came of it and Brown turned on the after-burners. A goal by Charlie Adams made it 3-0 in the 64th minute and an 83rd-minute strike by Carlo Brown made it four. When the final horn sounded, the Bears outshot Columbia 16-6.

The Lions will look to turn things around at home next Saturday when they host Harvard (1-2-4, 0-0-1 Ivy). First kick from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
