STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Columbia volleyball team hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday evening, traveling to upstate New York to take on the Stony Brook Seawolves. The Lions were defeated by Stony Brook in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-15), despite six kills each from Amanda Holsen and Hailee Watts.
The Lions never really found their footing in this one. as the Seawolves led wire to wire and never relinquished the lead in all three sets. The most competitive game was set two. Despite Stony Brook quickly gaining a 3-0 advantage, Avery Jones and Watts smacked back-to-back kills to bring the Lions within one point. The Lions and Seawolves would go back-and forth for a few rallies, with Holsen smacking two kills along the way, until the score was tied up at 9-9. Stony Brook would then go on 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead and the Seawolves would never look back. Stony Brook would go on to earn the sweep.
Holsen and Watts each had six kills to lead Columbia. Jones and Anna Gioranidi both had four kills. First-year Delaney Seaman had a career-high seven digs.
The Lions return home this weekend and will host their final tournament of the season. Manhattan, Rutgers, and Morgan State will be coming to town to participate. Columbia will take on Manhattan first on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Levien.
