Hu and Ganihanova keep rolling, win two more events each
NEW YORK — The Columbia women's swimming and diving team picked up its first victory of 2024 on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Cornell Big Red, 182-118, at Uris Natatorium.
"Coming off a tough dual meet up in Providence, the team bounced back in style at home today," Head Coach Diana Caskey said. "So many gutsy fast swims and such great team energy. It was an awesome end to a busy week!"
The Lions dominated right out of the gate in today's meet. In the first individual event of the afternoon, Aziza Ganihanova picked up the Lions first victory, taking first place in the 400-IM with a time of 4:21.40. Ganihanova would go on to win the 200-breast as well with a time of 1:59.40.
Just a couple events later, it was Emily Wang earning a big win for Columbia in the 100-back, touching the wall with a time of 55.31. Wang also won the 200-IM later in the afternoon with a time of 2:04.70.
Ashley Hu followed up her win in the 100-breast at Brown yesterday with a sweep in the breaststroke events today. She won both the 100-breast and 200-breast, with times of 1:02.02 and 2:16.26, respectively.
Allison Martin had a solid afternoon, taking first in the 200-fly with a time of 1:59.52.
Mia Avansino was the last Lion to win an event, taking first in the 500-free with a time of 4:54.57.
For the divers, Alice Diakova had a perfect afternoon. She won both the 3m and 1m competitions, with scores of 307.95 and 268.43, respectively. Macy Pine finished right behind her, claiming second place on both boards. Pince collected a score of 283.50 in the 3m and 253.05 in the 1m. Chloe Leung took fourth on the 1m boards.
"Really strong showing from Macy and Alice today," Head Diving Coach Scott Donie said. "I couldn't be happier with how the team is performing right now!"
