NEW YORK — Columbia track and field, as well as fencing, women's tennis, women's swimming and diving and men's and women's squash are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Lions continue their indoor season on Saturday, competing against Dartmouth and Yale in a meet hosted by the Bulldogs in New Haven. Columbia is coming off a great start to the year, with a few record breaking performances last weekend. Competing individually at the University of Washington Preview Meet on Saturday afternoon, Justin O'Toole made Columbia history in the 1,000m. O'Toole finished in fifth place in the event, clocking in with a time of 2:20.66. This time set a new Columbia record in the event, beating the mark of 2:20.77 set by Jeff Moriarty back in 2011. O'Toole's time was also good for the second fastest time in the history of the Ivy League. Meanwhile at the Penn 10-Team Select Meet, Obiora Okeke was the star of the show for Columbia, winning the men's shot put and weight throw with marks of 18.33m and 18.40m, respectively. Okeke broke the shot put record at Columbia, and is the first Lion to ever throw over 60 feet in the shot put indoors or outdoors. Columbia will look to continue that momentum into this weekend.
FENCING
The Lions have a pair of tournaments this weekend when they head to the St. John's Super Cup on Saturday, followed by the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday. Saturday will feature five dual matches and compete four more times Sunday in the City of Brotherly Love.
Last weekend, Columbia went a combined 9-1 at the Penn State Invitational in its first collegiate competition of 2024. The women went 5-0 to improve to 15-1 on the season, highlighted by a 10-2 mark from Tamar Gordon in sabre and Evelyn Cheng going 9-0 in foil. The men suffered its first defeat of the year, but still went 4-1 on the day and have to match the women's overall record. Justin Haddad led the men in victories with 10 in epee, and Zachary Zusin was 8-1 in foil.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Columbia women's tennis team will face its first road test of the season Sunday at Notre Dame. The Lions kick off the season with a home doubleheader against Marist starting at 10 a.m. Friday at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. Columbia returns to South Bend after participating in the Notre Dame Invite this fall. Julia Haynes earned a win over Notre Dame's No. 53 Page Freeman to highlight the weekend.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Lions will travel to New Jersey on Friday morning, for a conference meet against the Princeton Tigers. Columbia is coming off a fantastic victory over the Cornell Big Red at Uris Natatorium on Sunday afternoon, in which the Lions won a majority of the events. Aziza Ganihanova, Emily Wang, and Ashley Hu each won two events for Columbia in the win. Last year against Princeton, the Tigers won the matchup by a score of 180-115. The Tigers are the reigning Ivy League champions, and are looking to repeat in 2024.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SQUASH
The men's and women's squash teams hit the road Friday to open Ivy League play at Princeton. The men's team checks in at No. 6 in the most recent CSA rankings and will meet No. 5 Princeton. The women are ranked No. 10 and will face No. 3 Princeton.
The men's team is coming off a close 5-4 loss to No. 15 Western Ontario last weekend. It was the first loss of the season for the men as the team is now 4-1 overall this season. The match at Princeton will be the first of 2024 for the women's team. The women last competed on December 9 in a dominating 8-1 victory over No. 14 Williams College to improve to 2-3 overall for the season.
