Kelliher makes career-high six saves

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Harvard scored with less than 10 minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie and defeat the Columbia men's soccer team, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Jordan Field.

Columbia (1-10-1, 1-3-1 Ivy) took eight shots on the day, four of which came from sophomore Jack McDaid. The Lions saw their best chance come in the 32nd minute off a corner kick. The ball was curled right into the center of the six-yard box. Ryan Yang got a head to it from close range but his attempt was sent over the bar.

Harvard (3-6-4, 2-3-0 Ivy) was credited with 12 shots, seven coming on goal. Columbia keeper Dean Kelliher made a career-high six saves, his best coming in the game's 48th minute. Zachary Sardi-Santos blasted a shot from a tough angle and Kelliher was able to get a hand up to stop it. The deflection went behind Kelliher and was tapped into the back of the net, but the officials waved Harvard for offside to keep the game scoreless.

After a few more comfortable saves from Kelliher, he was finally beaten in the game's 81st minute. Harvard stole the ball away in Columbia's own half and sent the ball into the center of the box. Ben Kelly came down with it in between two defenders, took a control touch and found himself one-on-one with Kelliher. There was nothing the Columbia keeper could do as Kelly's shot was fired from close range into the back of the net.

The Lions celebrate Senior Day next Sunday in their home finale against Brown (5-6-1, 1-3-0 Ivy). First kick from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
