Poppe is one of 15 candidates for National Coach of the Year
NEW YORK — Columbia's Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Jon Poppe has been selected as a 2024 Eddie Robinson Award finalist. Poppe is one of 15 nominees for the award, presented annually to the national coach of the year in Division I FCS college football.
The award, first presented in 1987 and in its 38th season, is named for legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson.
Under Poppe's guidance, the Lions clinched their second Ivy League Championship, the first since 1961. With a 7-3 overall record and a 5-2 conference play, he set a new record for the most league victories for a first-year head coach at Columbia.
The Lions started the season with an upset victory over No. 14/18 Lafayette and started Ivy League play 2-0 before injuries began to pile up. Columbia used three different starters at quarterback but still won three of its final four contests to earn a share of the Ivy League crown.
Columbia received votes in the national polls six weeks during the season and had eight student-athletes earn Ivy League Weekly honors on the year.
All 13 FCS leagues are represented by an Eddie Robinson Award finalist. The winner, to be selected by a national voting panel, will be announced on December 5 and honored at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet on January 4 in Frisco, Texas.
