Henderson named Player of the Week for a third time; Broom garners first Rookie honors
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia's Kitty Henderson and Mia Broom were named Ivy League Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Monday. Henderson shared Player of the Week honors with Yale's Mackenzie Egger, while Broom earned the first Rookie of the Week selection of her career.
Henderson and Broom helped lead the Lions to a 73-53 victory over Towson in the team's only game of the week. A senior co-captain from Australia, Henderson went for 16 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and a steal in the victory, securing her second double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Meanwhile, Broom had eight points, three boards, one assist and a game-high four steals. The first-year from Seattle was 2-for-4 from downtown, connecting on consecutive treys early in the fourth quarter to help put the game out of reach.
For Henderson, the Player of the Week award is her third of the season (Nov. 11, Dec. 2), the most of any Ivy League player to date. The point guard leads the league in assists (66) and assists per game (5.1), ranking top 50 in the NCAA in both categories. She is also fifth in the Ivies in scoring (15.6) and sixth in steals (1.9), as well as top 10 in rebounding (6.1) and field goal percentage (.483).
Among career leaders, Henderson ranks eighth at Columbia in points (1,140), fourth in assists (410), eighth in steals (141) and 13th in rebounds (590). Her next start will be the 100th of her career, making Henderson one of just five players in program history to reach the century mark.
Columbia (9-4) begins the Ivy League season this Saturday at Penn (8-3). Opening tip from The Palestra is set for 2 p.m.
