NEW YORK – The Columbia women's tennis team will play three home matches this weekend at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. The Lions will start the weekend against Kentucky with a 1 p.m. first serve Friday. Columbia will then play a doubleheader against Syracuse and Wagner on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
LOOKING BACK
Columbia improved to 3-1 overall with a 6-1 win over Penn State at home last Saturday. The Lions received contributions from up and down the lineup in singles and doubles to earn the dominating win.
The duos of
Winta Tewolde and
Rachele Rimondini and
Anna Zhang and
Sophia Wang posted doubles wins to secure the doubles point to start the match.
Julia Haynes, Zhang,
Gayathri Krishnan,
Natacha Schou and
Clarine Lerby earned singles wins to help finish off the win.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Kentucky enters Friday's contest with a 4-1 overall record after losing to No. 1 North Carolina, 4-0 last Saturday as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Wildcats share a similar opponent and results with Columbia after defeating Penn State, 4-1 on January 20. Kentucky looks to be a test for the Lions in doubles play as the Wildcats bring two ranked duos into the match. No. 36 Elizabeth Stevens and Makayla Mills and No. 25 Ellie Eades and Lidia Gonzalez have been critical for Kentucky's doubles lineup.
Syracuse comes into Sunday's match undefeated at 4-0. The Orange have dominated their opponents early in the season with 7-0 wins over Army, Fordham and St. Bonaventure. In the most recent match, Syracuse defeated Cornell, 6-1.
Wagner will open its spring season Saturday at Seton Hall before facing Columbia Sunday in the second half of the Lions' doubleheader.
