NEW YORK and PRINCETON, N.J. – Following a 23-point, 13-rebound performance on Friday against Brown, Columbia's Abbey Hsu has been named Ivy League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played February 5-11. The league office announced its weekly winners Monday afternoon.
Hsu has now been named Ivy League Player of the Week six times this season, matching Columbia Athletics Hall of Famer Judie Lomax '10BC for the most in a single campaign in program history. This is Hsu's 13th such distinction of her career, fourth-most in the history of Ivy League women's basketball.
Tuesday, the Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) named Hsu its Div. I Women's Player of the Week. The award is the third of the season for Hsu and the fifth of her career. The MBWA encompasses 21 schools in the New York City metropolitan area.
A senior from Parkland, Florida, Hsu scored 23 points and registered a career-high 13 rebounds to lead the Lions to a 90-73 victory against Brown in the team's lone game of the week. She also tacked on four assists and two steals, going 7-of-14 from the floor, 4-for-6 from 3-point range and a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line.
Hsu helped the Lions take a 25-15 first-quarter lead, thanks to a period in which she went for 10 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals. By the end of the game, she had recorded her fourth double-double of 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds this season. She ranks No. 15 in the NCAA in scoring (21.3), No. 8 in 3-pointers made per game (3.00), top 25 in total threes (63) and is top 60 in 3-point percentage (.389), all of which leads the Ivy League.
Hsu will have two opportunities to eclipse Zimmerman this weekend when Columbia (16-5, 7-1 Ivy) travels to take on Dartmouth (6-14, 0-8 Ivy) and Harvard (13-8, 6-2 Ivy). The Lions will battle the Big Green on Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon contest against the Crimson at 2 p.m. Sunday's game will air live on national television on ESPNU.
