Columbia wraps up Ivy League action at home this weekend
NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team will host Harvard and Brown this weekend to wrap up the Ivy League slate. Columbia will face Harvard at 3 p.m. Friday before closing out the weekend against Brown Sunday at 1 p.m.
LOOKING BACK
Columbia is back home after defeating Bucknell, 25-13 on February 4. The Lions are 2-8 overall in duals this season, 1-4 in EIWA duals and 0-3 in Ivy League duals.
Aaron Ayzerov was named the EIWA Wrestler of the Week after a 2-0 performance against Cornell and Bucknell.
Ayzerov was one of three Lions to secure a bout win in the dual match at No. 8 Cornell on Friday. Ayzerov defeated Cornell's 7th-ranked Chris Foca for the second time this season in a close contest. Ayzerov previously posted a 9-1 major decision victory against Foca at the Cliff Keen Invitational in December.
Ayzerov and Foca battled through the first two periods with no score before Ayzerov was able to execute a takedown with about a minute remaining in the third period. Ayzerov was able to fend Foca off and add the riding point on to take a 4-0 decision victory.
No. 29 Ayzerov finished an impressive weekend on the mat by pinning Bucknell's Mikey Bartush in 3:22 to help Columbia take a 25-13 dual victory against Bucknell on Sunday.
"Winning the award is gratifying and a good checkpoint for how this season is going for me," Ayzerov said. "If any of my opponents were to think I begin to relax and become complacent after this, they are dead wrong. Every night I write in a notebook '2024 184LB EIWA CHAMP' and I will work even harder to accomplish my goals."
THE MATCHUPS
Columbia will kick off the weekend with a match against Harvard on Friday at 3 p.m. in the University Gymnasium "Blue Gym". Harvard is 3-5 in duals this season after losing to Princeton and Penn earlier this month. The Crimson have been led by Joshua Kim and Phil Conigliaro in dual matches. The duo is a combined 15-1 in dual matches this year.
The Lions close out the weekend against Brown at 1 p.m. Sunday inside Levien Gymnasium. Brown enters the weekend 1-7 overall in dual matches this season. The Bears dropped a tight, 19-15 contest to Drexel last weekend. Brown will travel to face Bucknell on Saturday before meeting Columbia Sunday.
