Men’s Tennis Drops Tight Contest to Harvard

Columbia will play a consolation match Saturday and Sunday

NEW YORK – The Columbia men's tennis team went down to the wire with Harvard, but came up short Friday night at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. Harvard captured the doubles point and held strong in singles to take a 4-2 win.

Columbia moves to 6-2 overall this season. The No. 8 seed Lions will now play consolation matches Saturday and Sunday to finish off the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Lions face 16th-seeded Alabama on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in their next match.

Harvard used wins in the doubles No. 2 and 3 to start the match with a 1-0 lead. The Harvard duo of Henry Von Der Schulenburg and David Lins posted a 6-2 win over Alex Kotzen and Sachin Palta in the No. 3 spot to open doubles play.

Theo Winegar and Michael Zheng responded by downing the fourth-ranked pair of Cooper Williams and Daniel Milavsky, 6-4 in the top doubles match. The attention turned to the doubles two match where No. 24 Max Westphal and Nicolas Kotzen battled Ronan Jachuck and Masato Perera. Jachuck and Perera worked a late break to win the match and clinch the doubles point for the Crimson.

Hugo Hashimoto leveled the score to start singles action with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Melchior Delloye in the No. 5 singles.

Harvard responded with a Milavsky win in the No. 3 spot over Nicolas Kotzen, 6-1, 7-5. Moments later, Westphal finished off a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jachuck in the No. 4 spot to level the score again, 2-2.

12th-ranked Williams put the Crimson back in front with a tight 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 15 Zheng in the top singles match. Zheng came up just short in the second set as Williams forced a break to hold on for the win.

Valdemar Pape clinched the Harvard with a 6-3, 7-6(4) decision against Sachin Palta in the No. 6 singles. Palta battled back to force a tiebreaker, but Pape was able to pull away.
