NEW YORK — Columbia men's and women's swimming and diving, men's tennis, track and field, lacrosse and men's golf are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Lions will head to ECACs in Annapolis, Maryland after a sixth-place finish at last week's Ivy League Championships. In Rhode Island, senior diver Alice Diakova was named the Career High Point Diver, which is a major Ivy League postseason award given to the graduating senior diver that has scored the most points at the Ivy League Championships throughout their entire career. In addition, Aziza Ganihanova had an impressive showing at Ivies with a team-best fourth place finish in the 200-back and the team's first podium finish of the weekend in the 500-free. Columbia has won three straight appearances at the ECAC Winter Championships, and is coming off a third place finish in this exact event last year, which was highlighted by the team's 400-free relay squad winning a silver medal. The team of Tina Le, Jessica Peng, Taylor Whang, and Callie Breiter clocked in with a time of 3:26.88.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
At the same time as the Ivy League Championships taking place in Boston, Mass., the Lions will also be competing in the ECAC Championships hosted by Navy in Maryland. In 2023, Columbia participated in the same event finishing in third place. The Lions finished with 392 points, while Navy won the event with a score of 814.5. Buckenell came in second with 416 points. Highlights from the competition on the men's side included a gold medal from Caleb Apodaca in the 400-IM (3:51.14) and a silver medal from Seth Roach in the 200-fly (1:47.34). Columbia will look to improve upon that finish this year.
MEN'S TENNIS
The fourth-ranked Columbia men's tennis team is back in action on the road at No. 49 Northwestern on Friday night. Columbia is back on the court for the first time since competing in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Lions fell in the first round match to No. 8 Harvard, 4-2, before bouncing back to post back-to-back 4-0 wins over No. 21 Alabama and No. 15 Duke on the final two days of the championships.
Following the performance at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Columbia ascended up to No. 4 in the ITA rankings. The ranking is the highest in program history and the Lions have held the ranking for the past two weeks.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Lions will compete in their final meet as a team in the 2024 indoor season this weekend, when they travel back to Boston to compete in the IC4A/ECAC Championships. Columbia is coming off a solid showing at the indoor Ivy League Heps last weekend, which saw Phoebe Anderson and Nikki Vanasse win Ivy League Championships in the mile and 5,000m, respectively. In addition, four different Lions combined for five silver medals throughout the weekend, as Obiora Okeke, Elia Ton-That, Rory Clare, and Talha Syed all received Second Team All-Ivy recognition. Columbia will look to close out the indoor season in style with a big performance at the ECAC Championships, and then all eyes will be on Anderson who will be competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend in Boston.
LACROSSE
After opening the 2024 season 1-1 at home, the Columbia lacrosse team will hit the road for the first time this season this weekend. The Lions will travel to Philadelphia to take on #13 Penn in both team's 2024 Ivy League Opener. The Quakers are the prohibited favorite this season in the Ivy League, being pegged atop the 2024 Preseason Poll, receiving all 16 first-place votes in the process. Erika Chung (2g/7a) and Niki Miles (7g/2a) lead the team with nine points each, and helped carry Penn to a victory over #13 Johns Hopkins last time out. Meanwhile, last weekend Columbia took on a tough Monmouth team, but fell short 13-12. Cecelia Messner led the way for the Lions with a career-high five goals and six points. Alison Surace collected a career-high four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Columbia will be looking to bounce back in a big way on Saturday afternoon.
MEN'S GOLF
The men's golf team will head to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to compete in the 2024 Cabo Collegiate. The 15-team tournament runs Sunday, March 3, through Tuesday, March 5, at the Twin Dolphin Club. The field will pit the Lions against some of the top-ranked programs in the country, which includes No. 3 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 8 Arizona, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 12 Florida State, No. 18 Cal, No. 33 Oklahoma State and No. 37 Baylor. All rankings are reflective of the most up-to-date NCAA Div. I rankings on Clippd.
